Official : Two Nigeria-eligible players sign scholarship deals with Chelsea
Published: July 07, 2022Through their official website, English Premier League giants Chelsea have announced their new intake of academy scholars for the 2022-2023 season.
Allnigeriasoccer.com exclusively reported in December 2021 that talented defender of Nigerian descent Somto Boniface was offered a new deal ahead of the 2022-2023 season.
Chelsea have now confirmed that the left-back is among the group of sixteen new scholars that signed their agreements during an event at Stamford Bridge this week.
Boniface experienced youth football during the 2021-2022 campaign, making appearances in the U18 Premier League and Premier League Cup.
He has been described by Chelsea's assistant head of youth development Jim Fraser as a versatile player who was signed from the club's local scouting network as an U9.
The second player of Nigerian descent who has signed a scholarship deal with the Blues is Chinonso Chibueze.
A winger by trade but capable of playing as a striker, Chibueze joined Chelsea at U10 level from Fulham and made his competitive debut in the U18 Premier League while still a schoolboy.
Boniface and Chibueze will be tutored by manager Ed Brand and his assistants Andy Ross and former Chelsea Academy graduate Jimmy Smith in the forthcoming season.
