Super Eagles early team news : Lorient DM, Watford CB out of AFCONQ vs Sao Tome and Principe
Published: June 12, 2022
Allnigeriasoccer.com has been told that Nigeria manager Jose Peseiro will not be able to count on the services of two players when his side face off with São Tomé and Príncipe in a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match scheduled to take place at the Stade Adrar, Agadir on Monday, June 13, 2022.
It is confirmed that Watford central defender William Troost-Ekong and Lorient defensive midfielder Innocent Bonke were not part of the traveling squad that landed in Morocco on Sunday morning.
Troost-Ekong suffered an injury against Sierra Leone at the National Stadium in Abuja three days ago, leading to his substitution in the 82nd minute.
For the third consecutive match, Bonke will not be at the disposal of the Portuguese football tactician as he is still recovering from an injury he sustained against Mexico exactly two weeks ago.
Leon Balogun, Kenneth Omeruo and Chidozie Awaziem are the potential candidates to replace Troost-Ekong in central defence and another option would see Calvin Bassey play as the left-sided centre-back in a 3-5-2 formation.
After the opening round of matches in Group A of 2023 AFCON Qualifying, the Super Eagles are second in the table with three points, same number of points as table toppers Guinea Bissau who have a superior goal difference.
