Official : Arsenal retain 12 players of Nigerian descent ahead of 2022-2023 season
Published: June 10, 2022Arsenal have submitted their retained and released list to the English Premier League following the conclusion of the 2021-2022 season.
As many as twelve players of Nigerian descent have been retained by the Emirates outfit for the upcoming season including Folarin Balogun.
Nigerian-born midfielder Tim Akinola has been retained, an indication that Arsenal triggered the extension option in his contract as the initial deal that brought him to the club runs out on June 30, 2022.
First team goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has also been retained along with another goalkeeper Ovie Ejeheri.
Young professionals Ryan Alebiosu, Zachariah Awe, Miguel Azeez, Nathan Butler-Oyedeji, Henry Timi Davies, Joel Ideho, Mazeed Ogungbo and James Olayinka will have to report for pre-season training as they have all been retained.
Balogun, Okonkwo, Alebiosu, Awe, Azeez and Ogungbo were named in matchday squads for first team games last season but only the striker who spent the second half of the season on loan at Middlesbrough got minutes.
Alebiosu and Akinola were loaned out to Crewe Alexandra and Dundee United for a portion of last season.
