Nigeria 2 Sierra Leone 1 : Three best and worst performers of the game
Published: June 09, 2022
Jose Peseiro got his first victory as Super Eagles coach after a 2-1 win over Sierra Leone 2-1 in a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja on Thursday evening.
Jonathan Morsay opened the scoring for the visitors in the eleventh minute, before Hale End Academy graduate Alex Iwobi quickly equalized for Nigeria.
Napoli's Victor Osimhen gave the Super Eagles the win with a close range effort after Moses Simon directed the ball at him in the box.
Allnigeriasoccer.com brings three best and worst performers of the game.
Best performers
Alex Iwobi
The Super Eagles midfielder performed outstandingly. He has adapted quickly to the deep-lying role and looks at home in Jose Peseiro's tactical set-up.
The Everton man scored the equaliser after a great run and top-class finish into the far corner.
Victor Osimhen
Despite just playing in one game under Jose Peseiro's tutelage, Victor Osimhen is already proving to be the Super Eagles' danger man.
His hunger and nose for goal be invaluable going forward and Peseiro would surely be happy to have such a weapon at his disposal.
Moses Simon
The Sierra Leone defence was constantly on edge because of his directness and creative runs during today's encounter in Abuja.
His first 15 minutes were really slow, but after that, he really stepped up the pace. It's good seeing him at his best after two torrid friendly games in America.
Worst performers
Sadiq Umar
Unable to synchronise well with Victor Osimhen up front, it was no coincidence that the Almeria striker was pulled off at half-time.
He was unable to generate or put pressure on Sierra Leone's back line, his holdup play was terrible and he'll be hoping to put this performance behind him quickly.
William Troost-Ekong
The Watford defender served as captain for the evening and was mostly responsible for the lone goal scored by Sierra Leone during the match.
Kamara's movement dragged him out of position and he didn't do enough to block the cross which Jonathan Morsay scored past the helpless Francis Uzoho from.
Samuel Chukwueze
Villarreal's right-winger showed glimpses of skill and was a constant threat on the flank, but his weak delivery and inability to make early judgments hampered his play today.
He needs to improve his decision making in order to keep his place in Peseiro's team.
