Iwobi finally proving that Okocha was right on his best playing position
Published: June 04, 2022
Many Nigerians are optimistic about the national team despite their recent defeats to Mexico and Ecuador in the last round of international friendly matches.
Three players deserved high praise for their performance in these two friendly games namely goalkeeper Francis Uzoho, Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi.
Iwobi's recent performance under Jose Peseiro is proving that his uncle Jay-Jay Okocha was right about his best position in the Super Eagles.
The Super Eagles legendary midfielder who is an uncle to Iwobi once said that the Everton man performs best as a No. 10.
He stressed that Augustine Eguavoen needed to play Hale End Academy graduate Iwobi more centrally to improve his chances of affecting the game.
However, the ex-Super Eagles boss mainly utilised Iwobi in a wide role but that has changed under Portuguese coach Peseiro.
Iwobi is slowly becoming Nigeria's talisman. The Everton midfielder is playing with a lot of self-belief right now, and he is doing an excellent job in his new role.
Alex Iwobi was Nigeria's link between attack and defence against Mexico. Against Ecuador, he took his role up a notch by remaining disciplined as a deep-lying playmaker (ala Pirlo, Xavi and Alonso role).
From deep, he set up Moffi and Dessers with two great chances, but neither could find the net. Another good chance fell to Dessers in the second half, but he couldn't convert it.
Okocha was right about Iwobi's best position, and it is refreshing to say that the ex-Arsenal star is proving it now.
