Ex-African POTY says he's shocked some players received Super Eagles call-ups; hails Dessers

Without mentioning names, former African Footballer of the Year, Victor Ikpeba says he's surprised that some players received international call-ups to the Super Eagles for their games this summer.
The 1996 Olympics gold medalist reckons that the unidentified players are past their best for the national team and the coaches should begin to search for their replacements.
However, one player who received praise from the Nigeria Football Federation Technical Committee member is Cyriel Dessers, with the ex-Monaco star noting the the performances of the Feyenoord striker in the Europa Conference League.
Dessers took his club form to the international stage, scoring his first goal for Nigeria on his full debut against Mexico on Sunday morning.
Ikpeba highlighted that the competition for places, especially in the offensive positions, is what can make the Super Eagles a stronger team.
Speaking on SuperSport's Monday Night Football, monitored by allnigeriasoccer.com, Ikpeba said : "I'm shocked some of these players are still part of the national team, some of these players we should do away with them, we need some fresh players in the national team.
"Cyriel Dessers he scored ten goals in the Europa Conference League.
"The likes of Victor Osimhen, Chukwueze, Iheanacho, Iwobi, Moses Simon must compete for positions, that is the only way we can get the best from these players."
Ikpeba concluded by saying that it doesn't matter if Jose Peseiro loses the upcoming game to Ecuador as it's more imperative for the Super Eagles to qualify for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
