'Playing with bags of confidence' - Chelsea legend hails Bassey's display in win vs Hearts
Published: May 21, 2022Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey earned plaudits from Chelsea legend Pat Nevin for his performance during Rangers' 2-0 win over Hearts in the final of the Scottish Cup on Saturday.
Bassey caught the eye in Wednesday's Europa League final vs Eintracht Frankfurt and followed that up with another fine outing against Hearts.
Playing at left-back, the 22-year-old showed his industry, creativity and versatility especially in regulation time.
The Rangers number 3 almost set up the opening goal in the first half, delivering a ball at the near post but Joe Aribo glanced his header wide.
A goal would have capped off a brilliant all-round performance by Bassey but Hearts goalkeeper Craig Gordon made a fine save to deny him with fifteen minutes left on the clock.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live , Nevin said before the hour mark: "Bassey is clearly a player who is playing with bags of confidence right now.
"He's got the pace and power to drive down the line all day.
"Three drag backs in a row from a full-back? That shouldn't be allowed - that was phenomenal!"
Bassey was named in the Europa League Squad of the Season for 2021-2022 after starring for Rangers in the knockout rounds of the competition.
