Three players of Nigerian descent unused subs as Arsenal suffer damaging defeat to Southampton
Published: April 16, 2022
Irish-Nigerian defender Mazeed Ogungbo and midfielder Miguel Azeez were both non-playing substitutes in the Gunners' 1-0 away defeat to Southampton at the Saint Mary's on Saturday.
Hale End Academy product Nathan Tella was the third youngster of Nigerian descent that monitored proceedings from the bench against his former employers.
Ogungbo has played 20 games for the Arsenal U-23 side this season while Azeez has been in action nine times in the Premier League 2 with one goal to boot.
Arsenal's third successive defeat is now likely to damage their UEFA Champions League aspirations.
Jan Bednarek put the Saints ahead with barely a minute before the break after he was put through by Mohamed Elyounoussi.
Mikel Arteta's boys lacked intensity in the final third and never looked liked they were going to take advantage of Tottenham Hotspur's defeat to Brighton & Hove earlier in the day.
Martin ødegaard, who captained Arsenal in the absence of Alexandre Lacazette, missed a glorious chance in the 80th minute.
Granit Xhaka also saw his shot at goal afterwards parried away by the in-form Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster.
