Netherlands make move to beat Nigeria to Sparta Rotterdam striker, also eligible for Togo
Published: August 23, 2021
The Royal Dutch Football Association have made a move to beat two African nations to the services of Sparta Rotterdam wonderkid Emanuel Emegha, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
Born in The Hague eighteen years ago, Emegha qualifies to represent Nigeria and Togo through his mother and father respectively, but it is the Netherlands that have taken the first step to provisionally cap-tie him.
The Sparta Rotterdam striker has been named in Netherlands U19s provisional squad for their upcoming friendly against Italy next month.
Should he make the final roster to be announced on Friday and impress during the friendly against the Italians, in all likelihood he will be named in the squad list for the 2022 European U19 Championship qualifiers.
The Netherlands U19s will take on Israel, Cyprus and Moldova in competitive matches in the U19 Euro qualifiers scheduled for November.
Emegha was promoted to Sparta Rotterdam's first team after starring in pre-season last year, and has gone on to make eighteen appearances for the modest club in the Eredivisie, scoring his first senior goal against Vitesse Arnhem back in May.
Manchester United starlet Dillon Hoogewerf and Bayern Munich loanee Joshua Zirkzee, who are provisionally cap-tied to the Netherlands, have been named in the U19 and U21 provisional rosters respectively ahead of the first international break of the 2021-2022 season.
