Europa Conference League : Sivasspor's Kayode and Ujpest's Onovo score important goals
Published: July 29, 2021
Two Nigerian players were on target for their respective clubs in the second leg of the second qualifying round of the UEFA Europa Conference League on Thursday, July 29.
At the Yeni Sivas 4 Eylül Stadyumu (Sivas), Super Eagles striker Olarenwaju Kayode scored the all-important goal that helped eliminate Moldovan club Petroclub from the competition.
Nineteen minutes into the second half, the Shakhtar Donetsk loanee just stayed onside and sent a header past goalkeeper Mickaël Meira.
Kayode subbed out a minute from time while another Sivasspor summer signing Leke James entered the game in the 84th minute.
Sivasspor will battle Georgian opponents FC Dinamo Batumi in the third qualifying round.
At the Sportpark Eschen/Mauren (Eschen), Ujpest came from behind to beat Vaduz 3-1, with last month's Super Eagles invitee Vincent Onovo making sure of the win with his team's third goal in the 85th minute.
Onovo scored arguably the pick of the bunch, lobbing the goalkeeper from 30 yards out to open his account for the 2021-2022 season.
Following their 5-2 win on aggregate, Ujpest set up an intriguing clash against Swiss opponents Basel in the third qualifying round.
