Official : Former Liverpool and Chelsea boss to manage Iwobi at Everton next season
Published: June 30, 2021
Former Liverpool and Chelsea boss Rafael Benitez has returned to the English Premier League following his appointment as the new coach of Everton, informs the official website of the Toffees.
For the first time in his career, Nigeria international Alex Iwobi will train under the experienced Spanish football tactician.
Iwobi was involved in international duty with the Super Eagles this month so it is unlikely he will be part of the groupĀ that will return to USM Finch Farm for pre-season training as from July 5.
Benitez will take charge of his fourth Premier League team as he has also previously coached Newcastle United.
He replaces Italian gaffer Carlo Ancelotti who was hired by Real Madrid in the off season after eighteen months at Goodison Park.
Benitez's appointment as Everton coach appears to be a controversial decision given his close connection with Liverpool, whom he managed for six years, 2004-2010, and led The Reds to win the Champions League in 2005.
The 61-year-old, who has signed a three-year deal with Everton, has also been in charge of Valencia, Inter Milan and Napoli.
