Three takeaways from Super Falcons' spirited display in defeat to world champions United States
Published: June 17, 2021
Nigeria put up a spirited display in their final game of the 2021 WNT Summer Series but were beaten 2-0 by world champions United States at the Q2 Stadium; Austin, Texas on Thursday morning.
The tournament, also involving Portugal and Jamaica, served as preparations for the American side ahead of the Olympics in Tokyo.
Izuchukwu Okosi presents the things noted from the game.
1. Second Half Revival
The Super Falcons began the game with a defensive approach and apparently gave the Americans too much respect.
However one can see that the team improved on their performance in the second half attacking wise.
In their quest to level up as they did against Portugal, the Falcons left too much space behind which USA capitalized upon to score a second goal.
2. New Girls Making A Statement
The one topic Nigerians, football faithful seem to find exciting is the debate over the number of home based or foreign based players to be invited to the national team.
From the performances of players like Michelle Alozie and Toni Payne in particular, it is heartwarming to see foreign-born Nigerian players doing well. And they must be encouraged to represent their fatherland.
Toni and Nicole Payne are even siblings. Great to see. And should be seen in the men's teams if possible.
3. Falcons and Set plays
The Falcons coaches must work on dealing with set plays and in turn perfect their dead ball specialties.
The Americans threatened severally from their free kicks and corners while the Falcons rarely have players that can produce those wow moments.
