Chelsea fullback eligible for Nigeria, England, Germany reveals country he hopes to represent

Promising Chelsea fullback Derrick Abu is sticking with his decision to play international football for England for the time being.

There was a debate on which country the defender would pledge his international future to as he also qualifies to play for Germany, where he was born, as well as Nigeria, where his parents originally hail from.

Nigeria were thought to be frontrunners for Abu around two years ago as he wanted to play for the Golden Eaglets at the 2019 U17 World Cup but failed to establish contact with the Nigeria Football Federation and coach Manu Garba.

Abu was born in Regensburg in south-east Germany and relocated to England as a child with his family in 2005.

On the footballing memory that stands out in his career so far, Abu said to Chelsea's official website : "Making my international debut. Playing for England (U17s) was a big moment for me and it would have to be the highlight of my career so far.

"It was in Marbella and we played against Russia - it was an honour and I hope to be able to represent the country again."

The 2003-born Abu signed his first professional contract with Chelsea earlier this year and has made eight appearances in the U18 Premier League in the current season.
