UWCL: Former Liverpool and Arsenal striker Oshoala on target in Barcelona's loss to Man City
Published: March 31, 2021
Nigeria skipper Asisat Oshoala scored for the second game running in the UEFA Women's Champions League but it was not enough as Barcelona were beaten 2-1 by Manchester City on Wednesday evening.
Despite the loss, the Spanish champions are through to the semifinals of the Champions League for the third consecutive season.
Barcelona took a healthy lead to the Academy Stadium in Manchester, beating the Blues 3-0 at the U-Power Stadium (Monza) with former Liverpool and Arsenal striker Oshoala opening the scoring.
In the second leg, Janine Beckie gave Manchester City hope when she stabbed home from close range to open the scoring after 19 minutes.
Three minutes before half-time, Lucy Bronze and Abigail Dahlkemper prevented Oshoala from equalising as they made a goal-line clearance after the Barcelona number 20 charged forward and shot at goal.
The Nigerian missed another golden opportunity to draw her side level when she was sent clean on goal but ended up shooting straight at goalkeeper Roebuck in the 50th minute.
Oshoala later made amends with Barcelona's only goal of the game in the 59th minute, tapping in after the ball was put on a plate by Caroline Graham-Hansen.
Midway through the second half, Samantha Mewis converted from the spot to make it 2-1, and the scoreboard didn't change until the referee blew the full-time whistle.
