Rohr makes one late change to starting XI as Iwobi tests positive for COVID-19; Super Eagles qualify for AFCON
Published: March 27, 2021
Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr has made one late change to the starting lineup for his side's 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against the Republic of Benin at the Stade Charles de Gaulle in Porto-Novo.
Everton winger Alex Iwobi was supposed to start in a number 10 role against the Squirrels, but has been axed from the matchday 23 altogether after returning a positive coronavirus test, just before the players and officials headed to the stadium.
The Hale End Academy product participated in the team's final workout in Porto-Novo on Friday evening and was also spotted during the team walk this morning.
Galatasaray winger Henry Onyekuru has come into the starting lineup as a replacement for Iwobi.
Meanwhile, Nigeria have qualified for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations without
kicking a ball following Lesotho's goalless draw with Sierra Leone on
Saturday afternoon.
The Leone Stars and Crocodiles cannot catch up with the Super Eagles in the Group L standings as they have four and three points respectively after five matches, while the three-time African champions are on eight points.
Nigeria Starting XI : Okoye, Aina, Troost-Ekong, Balogun, Sanusi, Ndidi, Aribo, Onyekuru, Chukwueze, Osimhen, Iheanacho
