Chelsea academy product Jamal Musiala has opted to represent Germany at international level over England and Nigeria, the Bayern Munich attacking midfielder announced on Wednesday.
There had been speculation over his international future for months as he was born in Stuttgart to a Nigerian father and German mother, and is provisionally cap-tied to England, where he grew up, and this made him eligible for three different countries.
Musiala has informed Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate that he has decided to represent his country of birth.
It is believed that the Anglo-German-Nigerian starlet made the decision after holding talks with Germany coach Joachim Löw and DFB director Oliver Bierhoff and he was convinced there was a clear path for him in the team.
Some Super Eagles fans believe Nigeria missed out on the services of Musiala because the Nigeria Football Federation did not try hard enough, while some are of the opinion that it would have ended in a wild-goose chase if the NFF had approached the player.
Here's what Super Eagles fans are saying on Twitter :
@football411ng : "Despite being born to a Nigerian father and German
mother, it was crystal clear from the onset that Nigeria was never in
the picture for Bayern Munich's sensation Jamal Musiala."
@xhodos : "While English and German FAs were on each other's throat over Jamal Musiala, I am not sure the NFF knew they could joined the fight for the boy to represent Nigeria....even though such would have ended in futility."
@sama_on_point : "@JamalMusiala who has represented England at Youth level has pledged his allegiance to Germany. Interestingly, Jamal Musiala is also eligible for Nigeria".
@Gossipcodenaija : "Nigeria Football Federation watching Jamal Musiala choose German national team".
@GoonerTwin : "Nigerian government incompetence which makes us one of the highest net expats in the world inadvertently fuels all this national allegiance chat. There is no Musiala chat without his Nigerian-British father having to leave Nigeria in the first place and yet nothing changes".
@IamRashman : "Nothing wey Nigeria Football Federation wan use toast Musiala wey England never try."
@WilsonObasa : "Jamal #Musiala has announced his decision to play for #Germany."
@IamRashman : "Nigeria FA did not even bother moving towards Musiala, Naija no get the range."
@IamRashman : "I wish him all the best!"
@Lamidi381 : "Musiala, please do not make that silly mistake by Choosing Nigeria over Any other country...Please dear brother. Don't".
