Cologne defender Kingsley Ehizibue says his family is happy over his decision to represent the Nigeria national team.
It was all but confirmed that the pacy right fullback would have made his competitive debut for the Super Eagles in their 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Sierra Leone in March but the games were later postponed by Confederation of African Football due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Born in Munich, Germany but raised in the Netherlands, Ehizibue remains eligible to play for the two European giants until he becomes cap-tied to Nigeria.
The 24-year-old has been in the international wilderness since March 28, 2016 when he played a non-binding game for the Netherlands U21 squad.
"My family there is proud that I could have played for Nigeria, for sure. You can feel that in everything," Ehizibue said to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf via FC Update.
"But even if it is Switzerland or Germany: my family is always grateful for what it has and is due."
Ranked one of the fastest players in German Bundesliga history, Ehizibue has appeared in 23 league matches this season and was in action for 1,818 minutes.
