Chelsea icon John Obi Mikel has received backing from Nigeria manager Gernot Rohr over the termination of his contract with Turkish Super Lig table-toppers Trabzonspor last month.
The Super Eagles legend ended his stay at Trabzonspor and returned to England due to concerns that the league was not suspended despite the coronavirus pandemic that has claimed so many lives across the world.
Including the optional year for the 2021-2022 season, Mikel gave up
wages totaling 3.375 million euros after cancelling his
deal with Trabzonspor.
"It is a noble gesture, he was right to do it even if he finds himself without a club today. You can't threaten the health of the players," Rohr said to Radio France Internationale.
"Many people have supported Obi Mikel, not just in Africa. He could count on the solidarity of the football family, it is very important."
Brazilian Serie A clubs Internacional Botafogo have been mooted as possible destinations for Mikel when the transfer window opens for business.
