Manchester United Striker Of Nigerian Descent Now Provisionally Cap-tied To Netherlands
Published: October 14, 2019Highly-rated Manchester United youngster Dillon Hoogerwerf is now provisionally cap-tied to the Netherlands after making his competitive debut for their U17 team in a 2020 European U17 Championship qualifier.
Born to a Dutch father and Nigerian mother, the former Ajax Amsterdam wonderkid has to submit an application to FIFA for a one-time change of association should he decide to represent Nigeria in future, provided he does not play a competitive game for the Oranje.
KNVB coach Mischa Visser handed Hoogewerf a debut for the U17 team as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Kosovo in Group 12 of the EURO qualifiers on October 9.
Having lasted the distance against Kosovo, the United striker retained his place in the Netherlands U17 starting line-up in Saturday's 2-1 win against Wales.
The 16-year-old has not been included in the Netherlands squad for the upcoming FIFA U17 World Cup, with majority of the players selected born in 2002, nineteen in total from a list of 22 named on the provisional roster.
Prior to his maiden appearance for Netherlands U17 team, he turned out for the U15 and U16 teams in friendly matches.
