'Denmark National Team Was Never An Option' - Onuachu Reacts To Maiden Super Eagles Call-Up
Published: March 05, 2019FC Midtjylland striker Paul Onuachu has stressed that he was never interested in representing the Danish National Team.
Fifa rules state that a player can assume a new nationality if he has lived continuously for at least five years after reaching the age of 18 on the territory of the relevant association.
The FC Ebedei product has lived in Denmark since 2012 but never explored the possibility of playing for the Europeans ahead of his country of birth, Nigeria.
Interviewed by Danish news agency Ritzau after Monday's Super1iga clash against FC Nordsjælland, Onuachu briefly replied 'no' to the question of whether the Danish national team has been an option and expressed his desire to represent the Super Eagles.
''I am super proud to be selected for the Nigerian national team. It's something I've been dreaming for a long time, and it's just a good feeling to have achieved such a great goal in my career,'' said Onuachu.
''It has been a goal for me for a very long time, but you just have to be patient. I do what I can on the football field, and now I'm just glad it has succeeded.
''I was called by the Nigeria coach and he told me he wanted to try me out for a while, and now he has found room for me on the team.''
Onuachu is Nigeria's leading scorer playing in a top league abroad, with 14 goals in 21 appearances for FC Midtjylland, two more than Northeast United's Bartholomew Ogbeche.
