Nigeria began their 2019 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations Group A campaign on a winning note with a 2-0 win against Burundi.
The Flying Eagles coached by Paul Aigbogun had to endure a physical battle at the Stade Seyni Kountche, Niamey.
Nazifu Mohammed's clever back heel from the six yard came off the post in the 36th minute.
Nigeria's Aliyu Ibrahim sent his effort wide inside the Burundi box within two minutes of the second half.
Aliyu' s miss might have caused him his continued stay on the pitch as he made way for Effiom Maxwell in the 51st minute.
Nazifu Mohammad broke the deadlock in the 55th minute with a header to make it 1-0 to Nigeria.
The Eagles piled on the pressure as Kano Pillars midfielder Alhassan Ibrahim let fly a low shot that went agonisingly close with 23 minutes left to play.
Burundi threatened to score as a tricky shot hit the side net but just a minute later, in the 70th minute, substitute Maxwell scored an individual goal to double Nigeria's lead, assisted by Nazifi.
It ended 2-0 as Nigeria top the group while hosts Niger and South Africa played out a draw.
