At the Hawthorns, Manchester City loanee Tosin Adarabioyo played the entirety of West Brom's 3-0 loss to Premier League opponents Crystal Palace.

A brace from Andros Townsend, plus Patrick van Aanholt's effort saw the Eagles claim a win and advance to the next round.

Manchester City began their defense of the League Cup by beating Jonathan Obika's Oxford United 3-0, with Mahrez, Foden and Gabriel Jesus the scorers for Pep Guardiola's side. Obika played the full game.

At Molineux Stadium, Kelechi Iheanacho won the game for Leicester City vs Wolves with a fine spot-kick in the shootout after both teams could not be separated at the end of ninety minutes.

Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi was given a much needed rest and didn't make the matchday squad, Iheanacho replaced Jamie Vardy after 60 minutes.
