Manchester City Confirm Highly-Rated Striker Is Eligible To Play For Nigeria
Published: May 01, 2018If there were doubts about the eligibility of Lukas Nmecha to represent
the Nigerian national team, they have been erased with Manchester City
confirming that the teenage striker can suit up for the Super Eagles.
Born in Hamburg, Lukas Nmecha has played for England youth teams but his international future is up in the air as he has yet to debut for the Young Lions at U20 level.
He was called up for England U20 games against Poland and Portugal in March, only to pull out of the squad, citing injury, but put in a full shift for Manchester City reserves in the first game after the international break, against Everton on April 1.
''A regular for England Under-16s, 17s, 18s and 19s, Nmecha, whose younger brother Felix plays for City’s Under-18 side, is eligible to play for Germany and Nigeria as well,'' Manchester City wrote on their official website.
''The striker has impressed during City’s UEFA Youth League campaign and at EDS level and has been at the Club since the age of nine.''
Lukas Nmecha made his Premier League debut in City's 4-1 rout of West Ham on April 29, replacing Gabriel Jesus in the 80th minute at the London Stadium.
His younger brother Felix Nmecha is currently a German U18 international.
