Super Eagles Report Cards Vs Algeria : Ekong Top Man, Aina Versatile, Iwobi Shows Flashes
Published: November 10, 2017Nigeria rounded off their 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign with a 1-1 draw against Algeria in Constantine on Friday night. But which players sparkled?
The Starters
Ikechukwu Ezenwa 6/10
Had very little to do as he was rarely called into action. Was well beaten by Brahimi from the spot.
Leon Balogun 6/10
His defending looked downright suspect following some jittery openings and could have been exploited.
Noticeably grew into the game after the first period and did substantially well.
William Troost-Ekong 7.5/10
Unarguably the best defender for the Super Eagles on the night. Made a meal out of Slimani and broke down The Fennecs attacks time and again.
Abdullahi Shehu 6.5/10
Was astute both going forward and tracking back to cut out sporadic Algerian attacks. Put in a couple of vital clearances before unfortunately conceding a late penalty.
Ola Aina 6.5/10
The Chelsea defender went on a few marauding runs down the left but final balls largely lacked any real quality.
John Ogu 6.5/10
Offered his backline very little protection while snapping into a couple of untamed challenges. Arrowed in a daisy-cutter which left Chaouchi no chance.
Wilfried Ndidi 7/10
Hugged his midfield duties tenaciously and did more of the harrying and shoving. Admirably held his own in the absence of his regular midfield partners.
Oghenekaro Etebo 6.5/10
Performed his duties well after returning to the starting eleven. His passes were simple. Versatile.
Alex Iwobi 6/10
His darting runs down the left flank could have done well with more better end products. Had a few efforts at goal either blocked off target or miscued. Came off on the 80th minute to be replaced by Ahmed Musa.
Kelechi Iheanacho 5.5/10
Had a nightmarish first period and was largely kept quiet for most part of the game. Stung Chaouchi's palms with a dipping free-kick.
Anthony Nwakaeme 5/10
Was not the best of debut for the Hapoel Be'er Sheva man as he was kept on the fringes for most part of the game
saved for few hold up plays. Went for power when he might have set up a teammate and was replaced by Onyekuru in the second half.
The Substitutes
Henry Onyekuru 5/10
A lively cameo from the Anderlecht attacker as he weaved a few artistry and even forced a shot which fizzled wide.
Ahmed Musa
Was barely afforded any breathing space after coming on and was reduced to chasing down stray balls or holding off marauders.
