Benfica Hit For Five By Arsenal : Iwobi Scores, Walcott At The Double, New Boy Kolasinac Stars
Published: July 29, 2017In the second game on match day one of the Emirates Cup, Arsenal beat Portuguese champions Benfica 5-2 on Saturday evening, with Nigeria international Alex Iwobi in the thick of action at the Emirates Stadium.
The first chance of the game went Arsenal's way but Júlio César did well to stop Giroud's header from going in after four minutes.
Benfica took the lead on 11 minutes when a shot from Cervi deflected off Mertesacker just as goalkeeper Ospina was about to make a save.
Their lead lasted only 13 minutes, England star Theo Walcott equalized for the hosts with a right-footed volley after excellent work from Arsenal's new boy Sead Kolašinac.
It became 2-1 Arsenal in the 32nd minute. Benfica failed to cover the gaps and there was no way Walcott was going to miss from close range after he was teed up by Coquelin.
The two teams went in level at the interval, after Salvio's deflected goal that came off Holding and beat Ospina.
Lisandro López sliced the ball into his own net to give Arsenal the lead six minutes into the second half, then Giroud made it 4-2 with an acrobatic finish.
On 70 minutes, Iwobi scored the goal of the game with an accurate and powerful right-footed shot that beat Júlio César, before making way for Ozil four minutes later.
Arsene Wenger's side will face Sevilla in their last match on Sunday, July 30.
