Chelsea, Everton, Spurs, Liverpool Nigerian Wonderkids Impress As England March On In World Cup
Published: May 26, 2017An impressive England U20s have topped Group A of the FIFA U-20 World Cup Korea Republic 2017 after an entertaining 1-0 win over the host nation South Korea at the Suwon World Cup Stadium on Friday night, local time.
There was not too much to separate the two teams, both of whom had chances to open the scoring, at the end of the first half which ended goalless.
Liverpool midfielder Ovie Ejaria ought to have broken the deadlock in the third minute after he picked up a pass from Everton wonderkid Ademola Lookman, but his angled drive was well saved by the Korean goalkeeper.
The outstanding Lookman saw his shot punched away in the 34th minute, before Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori's effort went over the bar ten minutes before half time.
A brilliant ball from the impressive Josh Onomah found Lookman three minutes after the restart and he tried to guide it through goalkeeper Song but was unsuccessful.
Lookman came close again after the Spurs midfielder of Nigerian descent powered through the pitch, and Ejaria didn't get hold of the ball properly before he attempted a shot in the 55th minute.
On 56 minutes, Kieran Dowell finished off a beautifully worked move to open the scoring.
The hosts thought they had equalized in the 70th minute but the ball was eventually cleared off the line by an England defender stationed near the goal-line.
Ademola Lookman came close to getting a goal that would have sealed the deal for the Young Lions but hit the post for the second time in the game.
Chelsea striker Dominic Solanke came on for the injured Ainsley Maitland-Niles in the 28th minute and captained the team for the rest of the game, while winger Sheyi Ojo replaced Lookman with five minutes remaining.
