Ex-Sunderland Defender : Nigeria Would Have Won 1992 AFCON If They Bribed The Referee
Published: March 03, 2017Former Southampton and Sunderland left back Reuben Agboola has sensationally claimed that the Super Eagles would have won their second African Cup of Nations back in 1992 if they had bribed the Tunisian referee Neji Touini in their semifinal encounter against Ghana.
The Super Eagles did not qualify for the showpiece game after losing 2-1 to the Black Stars despite Mutiu Adepoju opening the scoring in the 11th minute, and the sweeper has hinted that the referee made bad calls that didn’t favor the Nigeria side.
“The ref in that semi-final seemed determined that we were not going to go through. That’s how I saw it playing the match. It was a disgrace, ” Agboola told supersport.com.
“We had a player sent off did we not? (Ajibade Babalade). There you go then”.
In a no-holds-barred interview, the London-born Agboola revealed that he was not part of the squad at USA 1994 because he refused to buy a ticket to join the squad at their get-together as the Nigerian Federation did not reimburse him for tickets bought in earlier matches.
