Nigeria International Defender Makes La Liga Debut Against Barcelona
Published: March 01, 2017Super Eagles defender Elderson Echiejile made his long-awaited debut for Sporting Gijon in their La Liga clash with Barcelona at the Camp Nou on Wednesday night.
The Monaco loanee was finally included in the starting XI of the Asturias-based club after failing to make their 18-man squad for league matches against Alaves and Celta de Vigo, while he was named on the substitutes bench against CD Leganés and Atlético Madrid.
It was a debut to forget for Echiejile, with Sporting Gijon conceding six goals and the left wing-back was penalized a couple of times for fouling Rafinha.
Goals from Messi, Rodriguez (OG), Luis Suarez, Alcacer, Neymar and Rakitic helped Barcelona to register their 17th win of the season, while Carlos Castro managed to pull a goal back for the visitors in the 21st minute.
Echiejile has been named in the latest Nigeria roster for friendly matches with Senegal and Burkina Faso later this month.
