Cameroon Coach : Liverpool Star Matip Will Be Called Up For WCQ Vs Nigeria If....
Published: February 04, 2017Cameroon national team coach Hugo Broos has hinted that Liverpool star Joel Matip will be called up for the World Cup qualifier against Nigeria if he rescinds his decision to retire from the Indomitable Lions.
The German-born central defender was initially included on the provisional roster for the 2017 African Cup of Nations but pulled out of the squad, citing bad experience with previous staff.
Without Matip, Allan Nyom (Watford) and Eric Choupo-Moting (Schalke 04), Cameroon qualified for the showpiece game in Gabon.
“They still have a future, but the decision is now with them. I will not phone them and ask them if they will come,” Broos said.
“They have to phone me to say “I’m ready to play for Cameroon”. And not only for one game. Because when they come, they stay.
“ It’s not today I come and the next they go. So it’s they come for it all or they are definitely not coming.”
Nigeria will face Cameroon in their next fixture in the World Cup qualifiers in August 2017.
