Sunday Oliseh Steps Down As Nigeria Coach
Published: February 26, 2016Former Ajax Amsterdam and Juventus midfielder Sunday Oliseh has stepped down as coach of the Super Eagles a month before the national team square off against Egypt, citing breach of contract by the Nigeria Football Federation.
There was a mention of his backroom staff and players in his statement, with the former Super Eagles skipper adding that they are yet to be paid their benefits in the course of their duties.
“I feel fortunate, blessed and eternally grateful for having had the honour to play, captain and coach this great nation of ours, Nigeria,” said Sunday Oliseh.
“Due to contract violations, lack of support, unpaid wages, benefits to my players, assistant coaches and myself, I resign as Super Eagles Chief Coach.”
The 41-year-old Sunday Oliseh took over as Nigeria boss from Stephen Keshi in July 2015 - following the expiration of the contract of the former New Nigeria Bank libero.
The bad relationship between Oliseh and the NFF was soured further after Nigeria failed to progress to the knock out rounds of the African Nations Championship and he posted a Youtube video taking a dig at several stakeholders.
