Moses Simon, Efe Ambrose Score As Super Eagles See Off Swaziland
Published: November 17, 2015The Super Eagles knew they had to win to secure passage to the next round of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers and they achieved their aim courtesy of a 2 - 0 victory over Swaziland at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium on Tuesday evening.
While Nigeria did all they can, the scoreboard was unchanged when both teams went into the break, as the opponents defended deep.
On five minutes, Watford striker Odion Ighalo twisted and turned before winning a corner from his shot. Moments later, he found Moses Simon but the Swaziland goalkeeper was up to the task.
Swaziland had a decent chance to take the lead when a freekick taken was headed back across the back post before the ball was hit over the bar in the 33rd minute.
The game sparked into life in the 51st minute as Moses Simon broke the deadlock with a sublime set-piece effort form just outside the 18 - yard box.
Nigeria pressed for a second goal. The Gent winger would have doubled the advantage around the hour mark when he lashed at a shot but it was off target.
In the 77th minute, Ighalo combined with Martins and the Watford striker saw his effort beaten away by the goalkeeper.
Celtic defender Efe Ambrose doubled the lead in the 87th minute; latching on to a freekick taken by Sylvester Igboun before firing past Gwebu.
The Super Eagles will know their next opponents in the third and final round of qualifiers when the draw is made after the completion of the second round matches.
