Published: April 09, 2014
Allnigeriasoccer.com understands that the players of Dolphins of Port Harcourt might embark on strike with effect from next week if the management fails to pay them their sign-on bonus of last season.
Per the internal regulations of the club, at the end of every season, Dolphins credit the bank account of their players with the accrued sign - on bonus.
But since October last year when the Glo Premier League was concluded, that outstanding liability has not been settled by the higher - ups and some of the senior players in the squad have embarked on a media campaign to twist the arm of the club.
“We are not on strike now. We will still train on Wednesday evening. But we plan to go on strike next week. We want to do something to pressurize them to pay us, ” one of the first team players told allnigeriasoccer.com.
Starting from this season, like most clubs in Nigeria’s first - tier , Dolphins have abolished the payment of sign - on bonus which usually consumes most of their expenditure with the top earners getting around =N=4,000,000 (20,000 euros each).
It remains to be seen if Dolphins players are well motivated to win the championship they last won in 2011.
The reason being that their win bonus is nothing to write home about with each player getting =N=20,000 (100 euros) for a home victory.
On the other hand, an away win attracts =N=40,000 per player while they get =N=20,000 if they draw away.
