Promising right-back Habeeb Ogunneye misses out on major Manchester United honour
Published: April 25, 2024England youth international of Nigerian descent Habeeb Ogunneye missed out on a major Manchester United honour on Wednesday night as the Red Devils came from behind twice to secure a 4-2 win over Sheffield United at Old Trafford, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
Ogunneye was named in a first team squad for the seventh time this season but was a non-playing substitute against the Blades.
Before the end of the game, the promising right-back was in contention to enter into the history books as the 250th academy player to debut for the first team.
The historic honour went to 18-year-old forward Ethan Wheatley who came off the bench in the closing seconds of the win versus Sheffield United.
Had he featured off the bench, Ogunneye would have become the 103rd of United's academy debutants to have made their first Reds appearance as a substitute.
The London-born defender was an unused substitute in Premier League games against Manchester City, Everton, Liverpool, Bournemouth and Sheffield United, and was also named in the matchday squad in FA Cup matches against Nottingham Forest and Coventry City.
A day before the visit of the Blades, Ogunneye played the whole of the second half as Manchester United defeated Manchester City to win the U18 Premier League Cup.
Former England U19 international of Nigerian descent, Shola Shoretire is among Manchester United's 250 academy players who rose through the ranks to debut for the first team.
