NFF president visits injured Super Eagles trio Troost-Ekong, Simon, Sanusi ahead of 2026 WCQs
Published: April 24, 2024Nigeria Football Federation president Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau has been in Europe in the past few days visiting some players of the Super Eagles who are recuperating from injuries.
The Super Eagles will be facing South Africa's Bafana Bafana and Benin Republic's Cheetahs in back-to-back 2026 World Cup qualifiers in June.
According to a press release by the Nigeria Football Federation, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau met with PAOK central defender William Troost-Ekong, Porto fullback Zaidu Sanusi and Nantes winger Moses Simon.
Gusau held talks with Super Eagles assistant captain Troost-Ekong about the importance of the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and Benin Republic.
Simon and Zaidu have both suffered season-ending injuries and it is all but confirmed that they will not be called up for the June internationals.
The Nantes star suffered a fractured fibula during the first half of Nigeria's 1-0 loss to Mali in an international friendly in Morocco on March 26.
He has since undergone surgery, and his recovery time is estimated to be several months.
Zaidu also went under the knife after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament and the external lateral ligament of his left knee in the first half of Porto's 2-0 win over Estrela da Amadora on February 17 - his first game for the Portuguese side after the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
2023 Africa Cup of Nations Player of the Tournament, Troost-Ekong played through the pain barrier during the tournament in Ivory Coast and was operated on upon his return to Europe.
Nigeria will lock horns with South Africa on Friday, June 7 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, before a meeting with Gernot Rohr's Benin at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan.
