Three hits and three flops from Super Falcons' 1-0 win against South Africa's Banyana Banyana
Published: April 05, 2024Nigeria's Super Falcons edged out South Africa's Banyana Banyana 1-0 in a tightly contested match at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja on Friday evening.
The victory puts the Falcons in a strong position heading into the second leg of their crucial Olympic qualifier tie.
However, the performance itself was a mixed bag, with some players excelling and others failing to live up to expectations.
Allnigeriasoccer.com takes a look at three hits and three flops from the Super Falcons' narrow 1-0 win against South Africa's Banyana Banyana:
Hits
Christy Ucheibe
Originally a midfielder, Christy Ucheibe proved her versatility by excelling in an unfamiliar center-back role for the Super Falcons.
Her defensive heroics were crucial in shutting down South Africa's most dangerous attacker, Thembi Kgatlana.
Ucheibe's resolute performance ensured a clean sheet for the Falcons whilst forming a formidable partnership with veteran Osinachi Ohale, making her a standout player in the encounter.
Halimatu Ayinde
FC Rosengard's Halimatu Ayinde was a force to be reckoned with in the center of the park. Her resolute work ethic and astute positioning effectively neutralized South Africa's creative midfielder, Linda Motlhalo.
Ayinde's dominance in midfield allowed the Falcons to control the flow of the game and stifled the Banyana Banyana attack.
Rasheedat Ajibade
While the attack faltered as a whole, Rasheedat Ajibade of Atletico Madrid emerged as the lone bright spot. She stepped up and converted a crucial penalty in the 43rd minute, giving Nigeria the lead they desperately needed.
However, Ajibade's sole brilliant efforts were not enough to carry the entire abysmal attacking line.
Flops
Uchenna Kanu
Uchenna Kanu of Racing Louisville had an evening to forget. Squandering a golden opportunity to double the Falcons' lead early in the second half, Kanu's wasteful performance in a one-on-one situation with the South African goalkeeper ultimately led to her substitution.
The Super Falcons will need a more clinical performance from Kanu if they hope to secure their Olympic qualification.
Chinwendu Ihezuo
Playing her first game for the Super Falcons since 2019, Pachuca forward Chinwendu Ihezuo unfortunately failed to make a significant impact.
Throughout her time on the pitch, Ihezuo struggled to threaten the South African defense and ultimately had a disappointing debut.
The 26-year-old forward will be looking to redeem herself with a more impactful performance in the return leg.
Jennifer Echegini
Juventus midfielder Jennifer Echegini had a quiet outing in the midfield. She failed to impose herself on the game, offering little in terms of attacking threat to the opposing defense.
Echegini's lackluster performance ultimately resulted in her substitution, highlighting the need for a more dynamic presence in the center of the park for the Falcons.
While the win puts the Super Falcons in a strong position to qualify for the Olympics, coach Randy Waldrum will be looking for a more complete performance from his team in the return leg.
