'Knows everything about the team' - Awaziem convinced Finidi is the right man for Super Eagles interim job
Published: March 21, 2024Chidozie Awaziem has praised Super Eagles interim coach Finidi George and has said that it won't be difficult for the former Ajax winger to lead the team on a caretaker basis.
The Nigeria Football Federation announced the 52-year-old as the interim coach ahead of the international friendlies against Ghana and Mali, in the absence of a substantive gaffer.
Awaziem will be looking to be one of the players to impress the Nigeria-born tactician, having been deprived of game time under José Peseiro.
The Boavista ace has played sparingly for the Super Eagles over the past 15 months, making just three appearances, two during friendlies and one at the last Africa Cup of Nations.
Despite not having enough game time to impress, the 27-year-old has yet been invited to the squad for the friendlies against Ghana and Mali.
The Boavista center-back has described how it is to train under George and is hoping the Super Eagles can play well under him
"It has been wonderful, amazing, the atmosphere is quiet good, the weather the condition is good and we are all focused on the friendly games ahead and we are all getting along with our new coach," Awaziem remarked.
"I think basically he knows everything about the team, he has been part of us, so it is not going to be difficult for him to lead the team.
"He is doing amazingly well with the training sessions and I hope we are going to have a good run with him."
He also spoke about the rivalry between Nigeria and Ghana, stating what it really means for both sides to face each other.
"Honestly, we are planning to have a good game against Ghana. We know the rivalry between Nigeria and Ghana but we are all prepared and focused for the game.
"Football is not a game of fight. It is a sport, we are just going there to play, we are not going there to fight each other.
"We all are football players and we all want to fight for our country. I mean, it is going to be a wonderful game between Nigeria and Ghana"
The two West African sides are yet to face each other since they met at the final qualifying round for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
