Osimhen's replacement: Bologna's Dutch-Nigerian star among the strikers Napoli are considering
Published: March 19, 2024In the wake of growing speculation surrounding Victor Osimhen's future at Napoli, the Italian club is actively seeking a replacement for the Nigerian striker, with three promising candidates emerging as top contenders.
Osimhen, who inked a contract extension until 2026 in December 2023, stands as the highest-paid player in Napoli's history, boasting a staggering release clause of 130 million euros.
However, with persistent interest from elite clubs across Europe and the looming summer transfer window, Osimhen's departure appears increasingly likely.
Napoli has intensified their search for a suitable replacement. The club has identified three players as potential heirs to Osimhen's role, each presenting a blend of talent and affordability.
According to Tuttomercatoweb, top of Napoli's wishlist is Lille striker David Jonathan. The Canadian forward has showcased his prowess in Ligue 1, tallying 15 goals and 2 assists in 26 league appearances.
With a projected price tag of around 50 million euros, David represents an enticing option for Napoli, aligning with their financial constraints.
Additionally, Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has included Dutch-Nigerian star Joshua Zirkzee in the club's shortlist of targets.
The former Bayern Munich prospect has experienced a resurgence at Bologna under the guidance of Thiago Motta, notching 10 goals and 4 assists in 27 league outings.
Completing the trio of contenders is Santiago Gimenez, a versatile left-footed striker plying his trade for Feyenoord in the Dutch Eredivisie.
Gimenez has enjoyed a prolific season, amassing 21 goals and 4 assists in 25 league appearances.
While Napoli prepares for the potential departure of their talismanic striker, Osimhen's destination remains shrouded in uncertainty.
The Nigerian international, sidelined with an inflammation of a scar from a previous injury, has and is unlikely to feature in Nigeria's upcoming friendlies against Ghana and Mali.
