Arsenal's box-to-box midfielder eligible for Super Falcons becomes provisionally cap-tied to England
Published: March 11, 2024Arsenal's box-to-box midfielder Omotara Junaid became provisionally cap-tied to England on Sunday after making her first competitive appearance for the Young Lionesses in their opening game of the Elite Round of the 2024 UEFA Women’s U17 EURO against Serbia at Sports Center of FA of Serbia - Pitch 1, Stara Pazova, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
Junaid needs to request a one-time change of association from game's governing body, Fifa if she decides to represent the Super Falcons in the future.
The Gunners youth teamer is also eligible to represent the United States of America, where she was born, but the English FA have leapfrogged their two rivals in the race for the services of the promising teenager.
Having played in friendly games for England at youth level, Junaid hopped off the bench as a replacement for Aston Villa's Rachel Maltby at halftime in her first competitive game for the European side.
The tri-national player helped get the Young Lionesses midfield flowing with ease and was involved in the buildup that led to England being awarded a penalty in second half stoppage time.
Vera Jones broke the deadlock for England U17s four minutes before the interval, Denny Draper doubled the advantage at minute 81 before Lola Brown added more gloss to the scoreline in the 91st minute.
Before Junaid was approached by the English Football Association, she considered representing Nigeria at youth level.
Two members of the current Super Falcons squad, Ashleigh Plumptre and Rinsola Babajide changed their allegiances from England to Nigeria.
