Barcelona's Super Falcons-eligible striker accepts call-up to Spain's senior team ahead of competitive games
Published: February 19, 2024Barcelona Femení teenage sensation Vicky López has made a decision on her international future at senior level after accepting a call-up to play for 2023 Fifa Women's World Cup winners Spain.
Spain's national team coach Montse Tomé has handed a first call-up to Vicky López for the final four of the UEFA Women's Nations League.
La Roja will take on the Netherlands in the semifinals of the competition on February 23 and after this match they will contest the final of the Nations League or fight for third place.
López , the Golden Ball winner of the 2022 Fifa U17 Women's World Cup, is already provisionally cap-tied to her country of birth having represented the European giants at U17 and U19 levels.
The 17-year-old qualifies to play for the Super Falcons through her Nigerian mother and previously expressed her desire to represent the African powerhouse before playing competitively for Spain's youth teams, with her father making it clear that it would be difficult for the Nigeria Football Federation to win the race for her services in the future.
López celebrated her call-up to Spain's senior team by coming off the bench to score for Barcelona in a 2-0 win over Rasheedat Ajibade's Atlético de Madrid on Sunday.
Asked how she found out about her call-up, López was quoted as saying by Spanish sports daily Mundo Deportivo: "If I tell you the truth, I was studying that I had an exam to afternoon, and I was very happy, I couldn't believe it."
The Spanish-Nigerian striker became the youngest player to score in El Clásico when she found the net for Barcelona in a 5-0 rout of Real Madrid on November 19, 2023, aged 17 years and 116 days.
