Official: Lampard's former assistant at Chelsea, Newton appointed temporary coach of Basaksehir FK
Published: September 07, 2023Through official channels, Turkish Super Lig outfit İstanbul Başakşehir FK have announced the appointment of Chelsea academy product of Nigerian descent, Eddie Newton as the temporary coach of the club.
The coaching position at Başakşehir FK is vacant after the Istanbul club parted company with Emre Belözoğlu.
According to the press release, Strategy and Planning Director Eddie Newton took charge of the training session on Wednesday, September 6.
The 51-year-old previously served as assistant coach and head coach at another Super Lig team, Trabzonspor before joining Başakşehir FK as Strategy and Planning Director in November 2021.
Newton represented Chelsea teams for fourteen years and is famous for scoring in the 1997 FA Cup final against Middlesbrough.
The former defensive midfielder made over 180 appearances in all competitions during his time with Chelsea, winning the FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Cup Winners Cup and UEFA Super Cup.
Newton has a rich CV as he was an assistant coach to Frank Lampard at Chelsea and previously worked in the same capacity with Roberto Di Matteo and Guus Hiddink.
İstanbul Başakşehir FK have had a poor start to the 2023-2024 season having lost their opening three matches in the Super Lig.
